Rahu was born from deception and a stolen draught of the gods' own nectar. When the devas and asuras churned the ocean for amṛta, Svarbhānu slipping among the gods in disguise tasted the divine drink; Vishnu, taking the form of Mohinī, struck him down with the Sudarśana. Though beheaded, the part of him that had swallowed the nectar lived on as Rāhu: a head that could not be destroyed and a shadow that forever hung at the edges of light.
Marked by that illicit taste, Rāhu became a liminal hunger, secretive, insatiable, and forever attempting to reclaim what he had once seized. He slinks across the heavens to swallow the sun and moon in revenge, causing eclipses, and returns again to haunt thresholds and nights with sudden darkness. In myth and astrology his story explains both the physical eclipse and the disruptive, hidden impulses that ravage order whenever forbidden power is grasped without right.
