Atri, a great Vedic sage, and his devoted wife Anasuya were the parents of Chandra, the moon god. Chandra fell for Tara, who was married to Brihaspati, the guru of the gods; Tara and Chandra bore a son, Budha (Mercury).

The affair sparked a fierce quarrel among the gods, and Daksha, a powerful progenitor and lord known for upholding cosmic order, pronounced a harsh curse that dimmed Chandra’s light. Shiva intervened and softened the punishment, so Chandra’s brightness was not lost entirely but instead waxes and wanes, the traditional explanation for the lunar phases.
