Brihaspati, was the son of the great sage Angiras. After performing intense, grueling penances on the banks of the sacred Prabhas Tirth, Lord Shiva manifested before him and bestowed a dual honor: he was elevated to the status of a Graha (the planet Jupiter) within the Navagraha mandala and appointed as the Devaguru, the divine preceptor, counselor, and teacher to all the gods. Governed by Sattva (goodness) and expansion, Brihaspati became the cosmic embodiment of sacred wisdom and spiritual righteousness, standing as the direct rival to Shukracharya (Venus), the brilliant advisor to the Asuras (demons).
The Asuras held a grand advantage in their eternal conflict because Shukracharya possessed the Mrita-Sanjeevini Vidya, a sacred mantra that could resurrect the dead, prompting Brihaspati to send his devoted son, Kacha, on a perilous mission to become Shukracharya’s disciple and learn this divine secret.
The Asuras hated Kacha and slew him multiple times, eventually burning his corpse to ashes and slipping them into Shukracharya’s own wine. To save his beloved pupil, Shukracharya was forced to recite the resurrection mantra, causing Kacha to restore to life inside his guru’s womb-like stomach. Before tearing his way out, Kacha learned the mantra from within, burst forth, and then used the secret knowledge to revive his slain master. Having successfully acquired the vidya, Kacha returned to the heavenly realms, forever cementing the cosmic rivalry between the planets Jupiter and Venus.
